CITY-WIDE SLUM SURVEYS UNDER RAY
Based on its previous experience in negotiating and working with the municipal authorities, in 2011, UDRC was appointed to undertake slum surveys in the cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar under the Rajiv Awas Yojana program. The two year process carried out by the Mahila Milan-UDRC team produced data on 500 slums in the 2 cities, comprising 80,000 households. Survey formats were a lengthy 22 pages yet did not collect sufficient data to produce sustainable planning. Data did however reveal some key findings: 30% households still depend on firewood and kerosene, 54% of households in Cuttack and 75% of households in Bhubaneswar do not have access to water at home but are dependent on outside their premises, Open defecation is as high as 40% in case of Bhubaneswar and 44% in Cuttack and 20% of households in Cuttack and 29% households in Bhubaneswar live in Kutcha structures, whereas in both the cities, 47% to 65% households live in semi-pucca structures.
