ONGOING, RINGROAD RESETTLEMENT, CUTTACK

Since 2000, UDRC has been working with the communities living in 13 settlements located on the embankment of the Kathjodi river that are prone to flooding and under the threat of eviction. In 2005, the Cuttack municipal corporation began a massive eviction drive which is when UDRC got actively involved in supporting the communities to negotiate with the City for a rehabilitation strategy as a long term solution. A major challenge has been finding a relocation site in a city such as Cuttack with a limited supply of land that leads to high prices. The process has also been extended due to the lack of commitment by the city and the regular transfer of officials. However, the Alliance has initiated strategic thinking and encouraged communities to work with design professionals as it looks for opportunities to develop and implement community-led detailed project reports for rehabilitation.
