IN-SITU SLUM UPGRADING UNDER BSUP-JNNURM

In 2010, the Alliance took over the construction of about 900 houses in 6 slum settlements across the cities of Bhubaneswar (750) and Puri (160), under the BSUP (Basic Services for the Urban Poor), a centrally funded sub-program under a larger national urban renewal mission. Working in partnership with the Government, the Alliance has demonstrated the delivery of subsidised housing projects which are traditionally carried out by construction enterprises and for-profit agencies. This project is therefore an important milestone for the Alliance since the project was undertaken after being abandoned by other agencies that were unwilling to incur the escalated costs.

The project is currently in its final stages in Bhubaneswar with about 90% of housing construction and infrastructure improvement in the settlements of Bhubaneshwar completed.
